eduiconf.org – Discount code: RVA ($100 off Standard Price)
EdUi 2014 is next week! Don’t miss your chance to participate in Richmond’s biggest UX event. Even though it starts with “Ed,” it’s not all about education. If you have done (or want to do) work for large organizations or institutions, there are topics aplenty for you: content strategy, story mapping, innovation, user research, and accessibility. And even though it ends with “UI,” it’s not just about user interfaces. In addition to the topics already listed, there are sessions on prototyping, personas, iBeacon, UX strategy, to name a few. Check out the full schedule.
The closest UX events of this scale and caliber get to Richmond is D.C.—it’s like that, minus driving 2.5 hours (or more) on 95 and paying to stay at a hotel. And with discount code “RVA,” RUX members get $100 the Standard price. Single day tickets are available too, if taking off three days from the office would be a challenge.
EdUi is the biggest UX event Richmond hosts, so come out and learn some new skills, meet UX peers (and luminaries), and show your passion for UX here in RVA. Hope to see you there! http://eduiconf.org/register/
A little further north, our friends in IxDA and UXPA DC have a couple of events planned for the middle of October. See our previous post for details and discount codes!

RUX Related Event: RVA Content Strategy Hosts NBC’s Caroline Engle
Posted: March 10, 2014 | Author: Mark Badger | Filed under: events | Tags: apps, content strategy, RUX-related | Comments Off on RUX Related Event: RVA Content Strategy Hosts NBC’s Caroline EngleAfter the success of last month’s event with Facebook’s Jon Colman, RVA Content Strategy is hosting another Google Hangout at 804RVA. On April 1st, Caroline Engle will discuss her work on NBC’s Sochi 2014 “second screen” app, Primetime Companion. From the RVA Content Strategy Meetup page:
An increasing trend in content strategy is the idea of creating distinct mobile experiences to complement TV shows, movies and live events. This “second screen” is exploding in popularity. Joining us this month via Google+ is Caroline Engle, producer of the Primetime Companion feature for NBC for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.
The Primetime Companion was a feature that lived within the NBC Olympics Highlights and Results application. The feature offered engaging, complementary and interactive content that tied directly to the primetime shows as part of the second screen experience. Typically 200-250 pieces of content were produced for each show and released to the app at approximately the moment it was relevant to viewers. From the hours of 7p-12p, the app defaulted to the Primetime Companion.
Caroline Engle produced the Primetime Companion feature for NBC for the 2014 Sochi Olympics. She was previously an employee of the CBS television series “Person of Interest” in New York as well as The Golf Channel in Orlando. Caroline graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies and a focus in media studies and production. She is also proud to be a Virginia native, having grown up in McLean.

RUX Related Event: AIGA Richmond hosts Ethan Marcotte next month

The Map & The Territory
When we create for the web, we participate in a kind of public art. We code, we design, we build for an audience, shaping digital experiences that provide a service, or that create joy, or that simply connect readers with words written half a world away. But in this session we’ll revisit what we’ve learned about responsive design, and ensure our content, not just our design, is readily accessible to them wherever and whenever they are. In doing so, we’ll look at some ways in which our audience reshapes the way we think about our medium, and see where they might be leading us—and the web—next.

Location: Grace Street Theater, 934 W Grace Street, Richmond, VA 23220 (map)
