On Saturday Feb. 20, 2016, RichmondUX will be producing Richmond’s first World IA Day: RVA! We are planning a full day of discussion, learning, sharing, and networking.

Our world is full of information, and more of us than you may realize are involved with making decisions about the structure, placement, relationships between, and characteristics of information. Whether we are using the latest mobile app, watching the local news or navigating our way through the post office or grocery store, information is all around us.

Because of the ubiquitous nature of information, information architecture is not just practiced by specialists. If you work in any of the following domains, you’ll be right at home here: user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, web or mobile design, product design and management, data visualization, content strategy, library science, customer experience, and even service design.

On August 26th, RichmondUX is excited to host a long overdue presentation on a topic in the intersection between interaction design, UI design, and front-end development. IT Analyst at VCU and long-time RUX member Gaurav Gupta will talk about the Power of CSS Flexbox.

Abstract

Web developers have been trying to solve layout issues since the dawn of web. We started with tables, then floats and grids—each technique had its limitations. Thanks to Flexbox, it’s all about to change.

Flexbox is one of the most promising yet underutilized additions to the CSS3 specification. Using this layout model you can arrange elements in any direction, align them, distribute the space, assign sizes, stretch or shrink them to fit in parent element, wrap or rearrange them—all with far less CSS compared to grids.

Flexbox truly shines when used in responsive design. Changing the visual order, alignment, assigning proportional sizes of your boxes becomes a breeze. During this presentation, you will learn the basics of Flexbox specification and explore some of its practical uses.

Gaurav Gupta is an IT Analyst in the Office of the Vice Provost for Learning Innovation and Student Success at Virginia Commonwealth University. In his current position Gaurav wears multiple hats. As a web designer and developer, he builds websites and web applications with an eye towards simplicity and usability. In his administrator role, he has led the implementation of University’s online course evaluation system and manages its day-to-day operations. As a tech expert, he gets to play with the latest instructional technology.

Richmond’s first Design Week, produced by our local AIGA chapter, starts with a kick-off party at Hardywood on Wednesday, featuring Richmond’s Coalition Theater. Thursday evening, there will be a screening of Design the New Business at the Grace Street Theater, followed by a panel discussion on the role of Design and Design Thinking in business. RUX co-organizer Hope Norman will be on the panel, which will be moderated by another RUXster, Mark Badger. Friday evening features a talk by Debbie Millman (also at Grace Street), followed by two separate Adobe training workshops at Gather on Saturday. For the fourth year in a row, Richmond is hosting the edUi conference. Produced primarily by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, edUi offers a rare lineup of speakers, including top web innovators that will inspire and enlighten web designers, developers, managers, and user experience and interaction design professions from any industry. The Map & The Territory

When we create for the web, we participate in a kind of public art. We code, we design, we build for an audience, shaping digital experiences that provide a service, or that create joy, or that simply connect readers with words written half a world away. But in this session we’ll revisit what we’ve learned about responsive design, and ensure our content, not just our design, is readily accessible to them wherever and whenever they are. In doing so, we’ll look at some ways in which our audience reshapes the way we think about our medium, and see where they might be leading us—and the web—next.

Required Skills:

  • 4-7+ years of strong website design experience.
  • Strong experience working with PhotoShop, Flash, HTML, Illustrator, CSS etc.
  • Experience working on large scale websites and working in a corporate environment.
  • Strong client facing and communication skills.
  • Web Development experience is a big plus but not required.
