To Be Designed Conf. [Local Viewing]

RUX-TBD-image-web

Once again, RichmondUX will host a local viewing of a Rosenfeld Media virtual conference. As with our previous viewings, those who attended thought watching the online sessions together—and networking before, during and after—featured all the benefits of a larger one-day conference, minus the travel.

It’s been a while since our last meetup, and even longer since our most recent programming. Seating at Gather is limited, so grab your tickets before they go. Whether you are able to join us for the conference or not, please plan to meet up with us afterward starting at 5:30 at a place, well, to be determined. 😉

See below for more details:

What is the “near future” of design? It’s the stuff that’s far out enough to be fascinating, but not so far out that you can’t imagine ever working on it.

To Be Designed features six fantastic speakers who will take you on a tour of six “near-future” topics: the Internet of things, agentive technology, wearables, conversational UI design, designing with robots, and ethics for designing in the AI era.

RUX December – Happy Hour

Dear RUXsters – we are overdue for a meetup! And in addition to saying hi, catching up, and finding out what everyone’s up to, we want to thank everyone for another terrific year! A lot of UX and Design stuff happened in Richmond in 2016, and all of it is worth chatting about over a drink, alcoholic or otherwise.

As with our Happy Hour this past June, we will be meeting at McCormack’s Big Whiskey Grill near the Regency Mall. It’s pretty centrally located, whether you work in West Creek, Glen Allen, the Near West End or Downtown. Plus, as a group dedicated to cultivating experiences, you’ll appreciate Big Whiskey Grill’s atmosphere.

Richmond UX will take care of the food and non-alcoholic beverages. The rest is up to you.

Register via Eventbrite →

We miss seeing everyone, and we hope you can join us. Other than a few announcements, the only thing on the agenda is whatever happens to be on your mind.

When
December 7th, 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Where
McCormack’s Big Whisky Grill
(The one near the Regency Mall, not the one in The Fan)

RUX October – User Research for Everyone

When: Tuesday, October 11, 2016 from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM (EDT)
Where: United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) – 700 N 4th St, Richmond, VA 23219

RichmondUX has hosted three previous Rosenfeld Media virtual conferences, all at the Gather RVA downtown location. Though we love hosting events at Gather, the largest space available allows only 40 attendees.

Based on past interest in these virtual conferences as well as last October’s “User Research in the Age of the Customer,” we felt a larger venue would make sense. Thanks to United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) for opening up their main conference space for us, allowing us to double the number of possible attendees. We hope you can join us at the local viewing of User Research for Everyone!

Anyone can conduct effective user research. You just need to know how.

Your company might still believe there’s not enough time or money to do research right. Or maybe you lack professional researchers on your team. Or you’re new to user research and need to gain confidence and experience. Don’t let those issues stop you. The User Research for Everyone one-day virtual conference will show how to succeed with research that leads to products users want to use, buy, and recommend to friends.

Agenda

  • 9:30-10: Check-in and open networking
  • 10-10:45am: Just Enough Research with Erika Hall
  • 11-11:45am: The Right Research Method For Any Problem (And Budget) with Leah Buley
  • Noon-12:45pm: How to Find and Recruit Amazing Participants for User Research with Nate Bolt
  • 1-1:45pm: Do-It-Yourself Usability Testing Discussion/Q&A Session with Steve Krug and Laura Klein
  • 2-2:45pm: Creating a Virtuous Cycle: The Research and Design Feedback Loop with Julie Stanford
  • 3-3:45pm: Making Sense of Research Findings with Abby Covert
  • 4-4:45pm: Infectious Research with Cindy Alvarez

Check out full session descriptions and speaker bios. Note: we will provide coffee and baked goods in the morning, as well as food during Nate Bolt’s presentation (think of it as a working lunch).

When thinking about hiring you for a web design or development job, Most managers don’t care where you went to school, what your GPA was, or even what “skills” you say you have. They don’t even really care that much about where you have been working the past few years. What they care about is seeing your portfolio. Whether it’s a resume sent by HR, an email from a friend, or a business card handed to them at a conference, they immediately look for that URL which will show your body of work.

Your portfolio is the key to any user experience job. If you don’t have one, then you need not bother to apply. You can have all of the fancy schooling available; you can know the entire Adobe Creative Cloud product line like your own family; you may have have even worked at Ogilvy while moonlighting at Frog, but if you do not show your design thinking process, you might as well go into chartered accountancy.

Jason has been hiring UX professionals for over twenty years, and will share some of the insights he has gained about what works (and does not work) when presenting your portfolio, whether it’s to a prospective employer, client, or other designers.

What attendees will learn

  • Who is the audience for your portfolio
  • What every portfolio has to have
  • How to present your portfolio effectively

Agenda

  • 5:30-6:00 – Networking
  • 6:00-6:45 – Featured Presentation
  • 6:45-7:00 – Q&A
  • 7:00-7:30 – Discussion / Networking

This year has been a watershed one for UI design tools: Adobe finally launched X D, their direct competitor to Sketch, Sketch itself has not stopped evolving and is about to switch to a subscription model, and the venerable Photoshop remains a default install for many a UI and visual designer.

Though UI design is only one aspect of UX, it is the part of the process that defines the look and feel, as well as creating the assets for development. In that respect, choosing the best tool can have a big impact on both the quality of the designer’s work as well as their efficiency.

So, has the rise of Sketch and the advent of X D changed the playing field? Join us July 27th at CapTech as UI designer Rob Musser presents his analysis of Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, X D, and Sketch.

Get ready to RUMBLE!!!

RUX June – Happy Hour

Dear RUXsters – we are overdue for a meetup! We got plans for July and August and beyond in the works, but for now we just want to say hi, catch up, and find out what everyone’s up to. To that end, and to change up venues a bit, we will be meeting at McCormack’s Big Whiskey Grill near the Regency Mall. We figure it’s pretty centrally located, whether you work in West Creek, Glen Allen, the Near West End or Downtown. Plus, as a group dedicated to cultivating experiences, the Big Whiskey Grill has that in spades (or shot glasses, again…if that’s your thing).

Richmond UX will take care of the food and non-alcoholic beverages. The rest is up to you.

Inaugural World IA Day: RVA – 2.20.16

On Saturday Feb. 20, 2016, RichmondUX will be producing Richmond’s first World IA Day: RVA! We are planning a full day of discussion, learning, sharing, and networking.

WIAD-Meetup

Our world is full of information, and more of us than you may realize are involved with making decisions about the structure, placement, relationships between, and characteristics of information. Whether we are using the latest mobile app, watching the local news or navigating our way through the post office or grocery store, information is all around us.

Because of the ubiquitous nature of information, information architecture is not just practiced by specialists. If you work in any of the following domains, you’ll be right at home here: user experience (UX), user interface (UI) design, web or mobile design, product design and management, data visualization, content strategy, library science, customer experience, and even service design.

In short: if you analyze, synthesize, or organize information, content, or data—or if you just want to learn more about information archtecture— we would love you to see you there! Please visit the WIAD:RVA event page for details on speakers and schedule and to get your tickets. Please note: Attendance is free, but Eventbrite registration in advance is REQUIRED.

Thank you to our local sponsors for making this event possible! Please check them out.
